How to track phone calls from website visitors: taps, forwarding numbers and number swapping

How to track phone calls from website visitors: three ways

You can track phone calls from website visitors three ways: count taps on the number, show one forwarding number that logs each call, or swap the number for each visitor. A phone tap is a tap on a clickable number; it opens the dialer and does not prove a call connected. A tracking number is a real number that forwards to your business and is labeled by channel.

Lead Recorder counts phone taps on every plan, from $39 a month, or $390 a year, and its call tracking add-on, $29 a month, logs the real call through a forwarding number, as read on November 1, 2026. The best call tracking software guide sets it beside the other tools.

Count taps on a clickable number

Lead Recorder covers any clickable phone number on the site, in the header, footer or page content, with no thank you page. On a phone a tap typically opens the dialer; on a computer the result varies with the visitor's own setup, and the click is still counted.

  1. Make each phone number a clickable link.
  2. Add the tool's script tag to your site header; Lead Recorder's is one line.
  3. Tap your own number from your phone; it should appear in the feed within seconds. The vendor's free script checker tells you whether the snippet is on the page.

Show one forwarding number on the site

A forwarding number stands in for your real number: the caller dials it, it rings your line and the call is logged. Give each source its own number and the log shows where each call came from; CallRail's one-number-per-source setup forwards every number to your main business phone. Lead Recorder's add-on includes 2 numbers, works in the United States, Canada and Australia, and needs no phone system change; you keep your existing number.

  1. Pick a country, and an area code if it matters, from the dashboard; the number is provisioned in seconds.
  2. Set the number it should ring through to. Callers dial the tracking number and you answer as usual.
  3. Place the 2 numbers where you want calls counted, one per channel. Lead Recorder names a Google Business listing, a Google Ads campaign and a homepage.

Each call is logged with the caller's number and length, whether answered, missed or busy. The add-on logs calls but does not record them. For visitors who arrive from a Google ad, Google's own forwarding numbers cost you nothing, though the ad clicks are billed as always, and the default tag tracks one number per page.

Swap the number for each visitor

Swapping is called dynamic number insertion: a different phone number is shown to each website visitor, so each call can be tied to a visit. CallRail does it with a website pool: one script snippet on each page finds the numbers in the page HTML or an image and swaps them. The pool needs at least four numbers.

WhatConverts lists number swapping on its entry plan. Lead Recorder's add-on does not swap numbers; for a number that changes with each visitor, pick CallRail or WhatConverts.

Test it before you trust the numbers

Call each tracking number from a phone other than the line it rings, then find the call in the log, and submit a form as well. To test a swapped number, act as a first-time visitor. Google cannot verify a swapped number by scanning your page, so verify your domain. Rules on recording calls differ across U.S. states; check your own state's law before you record.

You need no paid tool if your calls come only from Google ads: see how to track phone calls from Google Ads. Lead Recorder's add-on matches a call to a visit only when there is exactly one candidate, and the path a call takes is in how does call tracking work. Lead Recorder can go on a live site with no credit card, and its home page calls that a 14-day free trial.
