What is Lead Recorder? How it works, what it logs and where it stops

What Lead Recorder is: the lead source tracking tool at leadrecorder.com, how its script tag works, what it logs and what it leaves to other tools.

Last materially reviewed November 1, 2026

Quick answerLead Recorder is website lead tracking software. One script tag records the ad, search or post behind each form submission, phone number tap and booking, and lists those leads with their sources. It is not a CRM and not a medical loop recorder. Call tracking is an optional paid add-on.

What is Lead Recorder? A plain definition of lead source tracking

Lead Recorder is software that records where each website lead came from. Someone fills in a form, taps a phone number or books a time, and Lead Recorder lists that inquiry with the ad, Google search, social post or referral that first brought the person to the site. The result is a feed of real inquiries with a source beside each one, rather than a chart of anonymous sessions.

The vendor sells it to business owners who spend on ads, to agency account managers who report to clients, and to freelance web designers. This guide reads the vendor's own pages and help articles as of November 1, 2026.

How Lead Recorder knows where a lead came from

When a visitor lands on the site, the script reads the campaign tags in the address, the referring site and the landing page, then holds them for that browser session. If that visitor later submits a form, taps a phone number or books a time, the lead is matched to the stored source. This is first-touch attribution: the channel that brought the visitor in gets the credit, even if the visitor read other pages before converting.

The vendor says the script loads after the page has rendered and keeps attribution in the browser session rather than in a cookie. It also says that does not by itself decide whether a site needs a consent banner, which depends on the site owner's circumstances.

What Lead Recorder logs as a lead

  • Forms: submissions from tools such as Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms, WPForms, Typeform and JotForm, detected when the visitor reaches a thank you page.
  • Phone taps: a tap on a clickable phone number, with the source and the pages viewed before it.
  • Email taps and bookings: mailto clicks and bookings through Calendly, Acuity and other outside booking systems, which you choose to count or not on each site.
  • Calls: with the paid call tracking add-on, calls to a forwarding number are logged with the caller, length and outcome.

Where Lead Recorder stops: limits to know

  • Not a CRM: the vendor says there are no pipeline stages or sales sequences, and leads are handed to tools such as HubSpot, GoHighLevel or Pipedrive.
  • No history: tracking starts when the snippet goes live, and earlier leads cannot be backfilled.
  • Taps are not calls: a tap opens the dialer, and the tap alone cannot show whether the call connected. That is the job of the add-on.
  • Keyword detail: campaign and search term data come from Google Ads, so they appear only after you connect that account.
  • Direct traffic: some leads arrive with no referrer and show as Direct, a share the vendor puts at about a fifth to a quarter of leads in its own data.

How setup works

Setup is one script tag pasted into the site header, the same place an ad pixel goes. The vendor has install pages for common site builders and for Google Tag Manager, and a free script checker that reports whether the snippet is on a page. For forms, create a thank you page that carries the snippet and point your form tool's confirmation setting at it. For Google Ads detail, connect the account from the integrations screen.

The Lead Recorder review weighs these limits against the features, and the pricing guide shows how the plans and the call add-on are built.

Is this the product you meant?

Searches for this name often drift toward loop recorders, a heart-monitoring device used in cardiology, and a Google autocomplete check on November 1, 2026 for the phrase 'what is lead recorder' returned only loop recorder completions. This guide covers the lead tracking software at leadrecorder.com and nothing medical. If you came for call tracking more broadly, the best call tracking software guide compares CallRail, WhatConverts, CallTrackingMetrics, Invoca and Lead Recorder by job.
