Free call tracking software: what is really free

Free call tracking software comes in three kinds: Google Ads call reporting, whose forwarding numbers on a website come without any cost to you; Nimbata's Entry plan, $0 a month plus usage; and 14-day trials at CallRail and Lead Recorder. Lead Recorder has no permanent free tier: Business is $39 a month, or $390 a year, as read on November 1, 2026.

Google Ads call reporting and forwarding numbers

Google tracks calls two ways: calls made from the ad itself, and calls after a click to your website. On the website route, Google shows a forwarding number in place of yours "without any cost to you", though the ad clicks are billed as always. That answers whether call tracking numbers are free: Google's are, and a paid tool's extra numbers are not.

Two limits apply. Google's call recording is limited to calls where both parties are in the U.S. or Canada, and its default tag tracks one number per page. The steps are in how to track phone calls from Google Ads.

GA4 and Business Profile: what each one counts

Google says Analytics is free of charge, and GA4 lists form_submit events, which suits a site whose leads arrive by form. It takes no personal data such as email addresses. Business Profile's Calls metric counts clicks on the call button, and its call history ended on July 31, 2024.

Nimbata Entry: $0 a month plus usage

Nimbata's Entry plan costs $0 a month and bills usage: $4.60 a local number and $0.10 an answered call. It has no number swapping, no call recordings and no Google Ads connection. Nimbata Pro, at $39 a month on monthly billing plus usage, is its first paid plan.

Free trials from CallRail, WhatConverts, Nimbata and Lead Recorder

CallRail starts every account with a 14-day free trial and no credit card, and trial usage over the allowance shows on the first invoice. WhatConverts offers a 14-day free trial on each plan. Nimbata runs a 14-day trial on every plan with no card required.

Lead Recorder is free to start but not to keep: its home page offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card, then paid plans follow, while its pricing page offers a 14-day money-back guarantee. No page says whether its call tracking add-on is part of the trial. The Lead Recorder free trial guide sets out the wording.

What paid call tracking starts at when free stops working

On monthly billing, paid plans start at $30 a month for WhatConverts Call Tracking, $39 for Nimbata Pro, $55 for CallRail Lead Tracking and $79 for CallTrackingMetrics Marketing Lite, each plus usage. Lead Recorder Business is $39 a month, or $390 a year, for forms and phone taps; logging real calls adds the $29 a month add-on, with nothing stated past its 150 minutes.

Stay with Google Ads call reporting if your only question is calls from your ads. Pick Nimbata for a $0 plan with usage on top, CallRail for a full 14-day trial of recording and number swapping, or Lead Recorder to count forms and phone taps. The call tracking pricing guide sets the fees side by side.
